What Is Rheumatology—and When to See a Specialist

Rheumatology is the field of medicine that focuses on autoimmune and inflammatory diseases that affect the joints and soft tissues. Unlike orthopedic conditions caused by physical wear or injury, rheumatologic diseases often stem from immune system dysfunction.

You may need a rheumatology consultation if you have:

• Morning stiffness in joints lasting more than 30 minutes

• Swelling in multiple joints (hands, knees, wrists, etc.)

• Chronic fatigue or muscle aches without a clear cause

• Unexplained fevers or rashes

• Positive ANA, ESR, or other autoimmune blood test results

• Known or suspected conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or gout
