What Is Otolaryngology—and When to See an ENT Specialist

Otolaryngology (commonly known as ENT) is the medical specialty focused on the ear, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck. ENT doctors are trained to diagnose infections, structural problems, and conditions affecting hearing, breathing, swallowing, and balance.

Visit an ENT if you are experiencing:

• Persistent nasal congestion or sinus pain

• Ear pain, hearing loss, or ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

• Sore throat that won’t go away

• Dizziness, balance issues, or vertigo

• Voice changes, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing

• Frequent tonsillitis or sinus infections

• Foreign object in the ear or nose (especially in children)
